Batumi Religious Communities and Churches

Batumi and the whole Adjara is a multi-religious and multi-cultural place, where every nationality has its place of worship here. One can see Orthodox, Catholic, and Gregorian churches Synagogue, and Mosque with minaret here.

Certain specificity of this part is caused by the century-old Ottoman rule in Adjara. The conqueror’s policy was to force the population become Muslims and to fight Christianity. Obviously the 300-year long isolation from Christianity bore its result: at the beginning of XX century the most part of the population of Adjara was of Islamic denomination. However, it should be noted that today the most part of population follows Orthodox Christian faith.

Besides Orthodox, Grigorian, Catholic Christians and Muslims representatives of other religious also live and serve God in Adjara namely in Batumi.
